Faculty-Student Project from BIGC Shortlisted for the 2024 IDEA Award (USA)
A team of students led by Associate Professors Hu Minghui and Yang Li from the Visual Communication Design program at the School of Design and Art designed the project Micro-floating Boat, which was shortlisted for the 2024 International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) in the United States. The Micro-floating Boat is a manhole cover designed to address life-threatening hazards caused by missing manhole covers during flooding disasters. It aims to prevent accidents where people fall into open manholes and also serves as a reliable life-saving device for individuals who may be swept into floodwaters. The project features an innovative structural design and carefully selected materials that help reduce the manpower and material costs of maintaining urban infrastructure, thereby easing the financial burden on city administrations. The project’s recognition by the IDEA Awards highlights the School of Design and Art’s achievements in design innovation, aligned with its development philosophy of “creative design and the integration of art and engineering,” and further enhances BIGC’s reputation in the international design community.
