The School of New Media is the first secondary school of Beijing Institute of Graphic Communication dedicated to interdisciplinary integration. Focusing on the all-media sector, it serves the entire publishing and media industry chain as well as the development of Beijing’s Four Centers. The School is committed to talent cultivation and scientific research in areas such as new media creative planning, art and design, technological implementation, and communication and operations.
The School of New Media offers two first-level academic master’s degree programs in Design and Fine Arts, as well as two professional master’s degree programs in Design and Fine Arts and Calligraphy. It offers four undergraduate programs: Digital Media Art, Digital Media Technology, Animation, and New Media Art. Among them, Design is designated as a “High-Level, Precision, and Advanced Discipline” by the Beijing Municipal Government, while Digital Media Art and Animation are recognized as National First-Class Undergraduate Programs. Over the years, the School has received multiple national and provincial-level awards for teaching and research. The Digital Art and Innovative Design Experimental Teaching Center is a National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, and the Digital Media Art Center is a Beijing Key Laboratory. The School also houses the National Animation Production and Talent Training Center located in the National New Media Industry Base and the National Teaching Team for Multimedia Art and Design, providing a solid foundation in teaching and strong disciplinary strength.

The School of New Media emphasizes the integration of art and technology, art and media, and interdisciplinary collaboration, leveraging its unique strengths to build a comprehensive, three-pronged talent cultivation system encompassing content planning and editing, artistic design and expression, and digital technology support. The School has established three major research platforms: the Art and Technology Research Center, the New Media Innovation Hub for High-Level Development, and the Animation and Game Derivatives R&D Center. These are supported by several teaching and practice platforms, including the BIGC Zhixing Virtual Reality Engineering Center and the New Media Innovation Lab. The School has also formed a number of high-level research teams, including the New Media Innovation Team, the 3D Ink Animation Innovation Team, and the Animation and Game Derivative Product R&D Innovation Team. The team’s multimedia work Resonance of a Flourishing Era won the Grand Prize at the 14th International Multimedia Competition. Several multimedia projects have consecutively received the China Publishing Government Award across four sessions. The large-scale 3D ink animation A Panorama of Rivers and Mountains was showcased at the 2014 APEC Summit in Beijing. The team also produced the large-scale immersive interactive project The Most Beautiful Central Axis, which was featured as a key exhibit of the Beijing Pavilion at the 15th China (Shenzhen) International Cultural Industries Fair. Leveraging the university’s role as a creative base for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, the team participated in the multimedia visual design and production for the opening ceremony, demonstrating the School’s strength in technological aesthetics research and new media design.

The School of New Media continuously expands its international exchange and cooperation efforts, establishing partnerships with institutions such as University of Paris 8 in France and Brunel University of London in the United Kingdom. It promotes joint development of international projects and builds platforms for global academic exchange, while exploring internationalized teaching practices and academic research in the field of all-media.
In the new era and on a new journey, the School continues to explore distinctive approaches to art education within an interdisciplinary context. It remains committed to preserving and advancing its traditions while further strengthening the integration of art and technology, contributing to the cultivation of interdisciplinary talent for the entire publishing and media industry chain.
