School of Journalism and Communication
Overview: The School of Journalism and Communication is dedicated to advancing cutting-edge research on media forms and modes of communication within the context of the internet ecosystem. The School focuses on core disciplinary areas such as foundational theoretical innovation in communication studies, digital media and communication, as well as digital content production and operations. With a particular emphasis on the digital content industry within the broader cultural and entertainment sector, the School aims to cultivate application-oriented journalism and communication professionals with strong comprehensive capabilities to meet the evolving demands of a rapidly developing industry.
Development History: The School of Journalism and Communication was officially established in June 2022, following its separation from the former School of Journalism and Publishing. As an independent secondary school within BIGC, it continues to provide strong support for the development of the publishing discipline at BIGC, while also pioneering new academic and practical frontiers in the field of journalism and communication.
Academic Programs and Disciplines: The School offers four undergraduate programs: Journalism, Communication, Advertising, as well as Internet and New Media. Among them, the Internet and New Media program is designated as a National First-Class Undergraduate Program, while Journalism, Advertising, and Communication are recognized as Beijing Municipal First-Class Undergraduate Programs. At the graduate level, the School offers two master’s degree programs: Journalism and Communication (academic track), and Journalism and Communication (professional track). Notably, Journalism and Communication has been selected for inclusion in the list of “High-Level, Precision, and Advanced Disciplines” (Gaofen Jingjian) by Beijing municipal authorities. In addition, the School jointly established the Beijing Research Base for the Publishing Industry and Culture with the School of Publishing and the School of Economics and Management, and co-founded the Beijing Cross-Media Publishing Laboratory with the School of Publishing, further promoting interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation.

Faculty and Student Numbers: The School currently has 656 undergraduate students and 353 postgraduate students. There are 49 faculty and staff members in total, including 38 full-time faculty members. Among the faculty, there are 9 professors and 13 associate professors, with 30 holding doctoral degrees. The School has developed a well-structured and academically strong teaching team.

Research Platforms: The School has established seven major research platforms: the Center for Mainstream Public Opinion Research, the Digital Music Industry Research Center, the Center for Shared Modernization Studies, the Exhibition and Communication Research Center, the Science Communication Research Center, the Climate Change and Environmental Communication Research Center, and the Smart City Communication Research Center. The School emphasizes the integration of theory and practice, actively conducting collaborative research with industry organizations and enterprises to ensure that its curriculum aligns closely with societal development needs. It also continually explores innovative teaching models.
Public Service: The School has made significant contributions to the development of the capital’s cultural landscape and the publishing and media industries. It organized the “Digital Music Communication and Influence” sub-forum at the China Digital Music Industry Conference and released the China Digital Music Industry Report (2023). In addition, the School hosted the launch event and roundtable discussion for the new publication Observations on Corporate Social Responsibility in the Publishing Industry, as well as the Seminar on Emerging Interdisciplinary Platforms in Beijing Universities. The School has also been deeply involved in the “Jingcai” series of cultural activities, organizing initiatives such as the “Jingcai Cultural Book Tour” and collaborative student reading programs across universities in the capital, actively promoting cultural communication and the practice of social responsibility.

International Exchange: The School actively engages in international academic exchange and has organized numerous international academic events, including media-related lectures in collaboration with the University of Warsaw in Poland, broadening the global perspective of both faculty and students. Faculty members actively participate in top-tier international academic conferences and have delivered presentations at these events, significantly enhancing the School’s international influence and academic reputation.
